It is Capitol Woodcarvers privilege and distinct pleasure to recognize Laurie Ladd as our Featured Carver for 2026. Laurie is an accomplished carver, and valued member of Capitol Woodcarvers.

Laurie started carving several years ago with her husband Fay Ladd and her sister Patty Ashford. They took a class with Dave Deiselbrett at Woodcrafters then started classes with Dave Walker in his garage. Laurie carved with Dave Walker for about 3 years. It was during these classes that she learned about and became a member of Capitol Woodcarvers. Laurie continued carving with Dave Deiselbrett at the Salem Senior Center located in the Hollywood District of Salem and she continues to carve at Center 50+.

Laurie volunteered as a Club helper in whatever capacity needed. She served on the Board of Directors and as Club Secretary for about seven years. She is an active volunteer for the Oregon Woodcarvers Rendezvous and the Annual Capitol Woodcarvers Show. These event auctions and raffles are successful due in large part to Laurie's participation.

Laurie is a very experienced carver who likes to try different mediums. Most of her experience is carving caricatures using basswood but her cottonwood bark houses are outstanding. Pyrography is also an art enjoyed by Laurie, and her wood-burned art projects really show off her artistic ability. Laurie is continually trying to improve and is an active participant in club events such as classes and open studios. One of the things Laurie likes most about Capitol Woodcarvers is the willingness to share techniques and ideas with each other.

Laurie says one of her greatest joys about woodcarving is that she has met many great people and has developed friendships with many other carvers.

Laurie wants to thank all the wonderful carvers who have been an inspiration to her improved carving.
